It's Okay to Ask for Help

It’s Okay to Ask for Help

By: Christy Pennison, LPC-S

It’s okay to ask for help! However, asking for help from others is hard for a lot of people.  Maybe this is because we want to be able to do it on our own or we don’t want to be a burden to someone.  However, during a pandemic we should not be trying to “go it alone”.  In fact, now, more than ever we need to give ourselves permission to ask for guidance.

Don’t Struggle to Ask for Help

If you struggle with asking for help, ask yourself why?  Is it because you are fearful of others’ perceptions?  Scared someone will say no?  Feel it is a sign of weakness?  Get clear on what it is that prevents you from asking others. Recognizing what’s holding you back is the first step in being able to ask for the help you need.

Next, get clear on what you need. Are you feeling overwhelmed?  Have you lost your job and don’t know where to look for another opportunity?  Is there something you need to learn how to do?  Are you lonely and just want someone to talk to?  Whatever your need is, take time to be honest with yourself about what you need help with.

Once you get clear on your need then identify who could help you.  Make a list of the individuals who could potentially lend a helping hand or a listening ear.  Les Brown, a motivational speaker, says,  “Ask for help and don’t stop until you get it.  Not because you are weak, but because you want to remain strong.”  Many people are wanting to help right now, but they don’t know how they can help unless you ask.

Don’t Stop Asking for Help from Others

Finally, don’t stop until you get what you need.  You may get 5 “no’s” before you get one “yes”, but keep asking.  Remember, if you never ask for what you need, the answer will always be “no”.

The Effects of Coronavirus

Right now we are all faced with the effects of coronavirus, but the ways it has impacted our lives are different.  No matter where you are in this experience, just know you are not alone. Better days are ahead. It’s okay to seek guidance.

This article was written in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month. Everyone faces challenges in life that can impact their mental health, and 1 in 5 people will experience a mental illness during their lifetime. Just know there is help available.  If you or someone you know is struggling, don’t be afraid to reach out.
