How Trauma Therapy Works

Trauma therapy consists of one-on-one sessions that help you work through your concerns. In addition to listening, your counselor will use an evidenced-based approach such as Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), or Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) to help you learn ways to heal from trauma.  Here’s a few things you can expect:

  1. 1. First, your counselor will provide a safe, accepting space so that you will feel comfortable sharing your experience.
  2. 2. Through hearing your story, your counselor will help you begin to put words and feelings to your memories as you are able.
  3. 3. We will explore the beliefs about yourself, feelings, sensations, and images that represent the traumatic event.
  4. 4. We will also work to increase awareness around your current struggles and how they are related to the trauma.
  5. 5. Together, we will find ways to develop new beliefs and discover new tools that will support you in moving through the traumatic experience.
  6. 6. Over the course of your sessions, you will begin to reconnect to yourself and others to be able to bravely move forward with a renewed sense of hope for the future
