5 Things to Prepare Your Kids for Back to School Now
School’s In? In between late May to mid-August, it is your kids’ job to relax and have fun. As a parent, you must know what to do to prepare for after summer is over. For kids in Rapides parish, August 14th is right around the corner. Here are a few helpful tips to prepare your kids for back to school.
Reinforcing Bedtime
While during the summer, it is okay for your little ones to stay up late. On school mornings, the last thing you want is a tired kid. In order to prepare for this now, you can dial back their bedtime 15 minutes every two weeks. By the time August rolls around, they will be back to their normal routine. This will not only prepare them for waking up early again, but this will also give you extra time to yourself at night.
Summer Reading/Assignments
While summer is meant for a break, it is also important to provide your kids with a review or at the very least get started on their summer reading or assignments. 30 every two weeks can help stretch out their work. It can feel less overwhelming to break this large task into small sessions. If your kid is needing motivation, reading together or doing their homework with them can be a great motivator.
Summer Routine
A great way to stay on top of bedtime and completing summer reading is by establishing a routine. During the summer, most kids are at home more often than usual. It can be difficult for children to keep themselves entertained. One thing to help prevent hearing, “ I’m bored,” every few minutes is to create a routine for your kids. This could mean getting them to help with chores more often, making meals together, or in general spending more family time together.
Start Buying School Supplies
School supplies can be very expensive. If you start now and break up your purchases, you can beat the last-minute crowds and feel less overwhelmed when school starts again. Here’s a link to access the current 2023-2024 school supply lists for Rapides parish: https://www.rpsb.us/school-supply-list
School Clothes
Speaking of school supplies, school uniforms are back in stock at local stores. Many children have growth spurts over the summer and may not fit their old uniforms. Time to see what fits and what needs to be replaced. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you may have to buy all new colors depending on what school your child is attending in the fall.
Summertime is the time to relax. But preparing for back to school now, can save lots of stress and anxiety later. Reinforcing bedtime, getting a head start on summer reading, creating a summer routine, and begin buying school clothes/ school supplies. By being prepared for back to school, you can create an environment where falling back into this routine can be less stressful and more fun!
