The Beautiful Complexity of Being Human: A Therapist Reflection

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about what it really means to be human. It’s such a unique experience—messy, meaningful, and sometimes mystifying. We each start our journey at birth, thrust into a world we didn’t choose, and then spend the rest of our lives trying to figure it out. Along the way, we learn, grow, struggle, celebrate, and keep evolving.

But have you ever paused to ask yourself: Who am I really? Not the roles you play or the titles you hold—but the real you, beneath it all. Being human means living in that question, constantly discovering pieces of yourself as life unfolds.

In the spirit of reflection, I want to share four truths I’ve come to believe about the human experience. These aren’t answers, because truthfully, we’re all still figuring it out. But they’re guideposts—reminders that may resonate as you navigate your own journey.

4 Truths I’ve Learned as a Therapist About Being Human

1. It’s okay to be human

No one gets a handbook for life. There’s no perfect way to do this. We all make mistakes, face setbacks, and sometimes feel like we’re getting it all wrong. But part of being human is giving yourself permission to not have it all figured out. Grace matters. Compassion—for yourself and others—matters. We’re all works in progress.

2. You need connection

We weren’t designed to do life alone. As much as independence is valued, we thrive in community. Whether it’s friends, family, a partner, a mentor, or a support group—we need people who see us, accept us, and remind us we’re not alone. Even when we feel like isolating, connection has the power to ground and heal us.

3. Find purpose

The possibilities in one lifetime are endless. What gives your life meaning may change with the seasons, and that’s okay. Sometimes purpose looks like a big mission; other times it’s simply showing up for someone, creating something meaningful, or being present in your day. The key is to stay curious about what makes you feel alive—and follow that.

4. If you’re struggling, let someone walk with you

Life can be hard. And while there’s strength in resilience, there’s also incredible courage in reaching out. You don’t have to suffer in silence. Whether it’s a therapist, a trusted friend, or a spiritual advisor, find someone who can walk with you until the days feel lighter again. You’re not weak for needing help—you’re human.

The truth is, the human experience is layered. It holds both the highs and the lows, the certainty and the unknown. And through it all, we keep waking up, breathing in, and trying again. That in itself is something worth honoring.

So, if you’ve been wondering if you’re doing this whole life thing “right,” let this be your reminder: You are. Keep going. Keep growing. Keep being human.
