Beyond “Just Anxiety”: How Women’s Symptoms Are Misdiagnosed
Part 1 of the Say It Louder Series
How many women have heard phrases like:
“It’s just stress.”
“That’s normal for your age.”
“Hormones fluctuate.”
“Try birth control.”
“Let’s increase your antidepressant.”
“You just need to relax.”
And how many women have left those appointments knowing something still felt wrong?
Too many—including myself and many women and girls I know and love.
How Women’s Symptoms Are Dismissed
Women are often taught to tolerate pain, normalize exhaustion, and push through symptoms that deserve deeper medical attention. We’re praised for being resilient while quietly carrying issues that may be connected to real biological concerns.
And when those symptoms begin affecting mental health? Many women are quickly prescribed anxiety or depression medication before anyone fully explores what may be happening physically.
Let me be clear: therapy and medication can be incredibly helpful. I’m a mental health professional—I believe deeply in this work. But mental health treatment should never replace proper medical evaluation.
How Women’s Symptoms Are Prescribed Away
One of the first things I learned in counseling training was that medical causes should be ruled out when someone experiences changes in mood, behavior, or functioning. Yet many women are still treated in pieces instead of as whole people.
A young girl may begin puberty early. Her periods may be painful, heavy, or irregular. She may struggle with fatigue, anxiety, mood swings, poor sleep, brain fog, or depression. The list goes on and continues well into adulthood. Then perimenopause and menopause.
Often the response is:
Birth control.
Antidepressants.
Anti-anxiety medication.
“Lose weight.”
“Sleep better.”
Sometimes these treatments help. Sometimes they don’t. And sometimes they make it so much worse.
Meanwhile, deeper questions may never be asked:
Could hormones be contributing?
Are nutrient deficiencies being missed?
Is inflammation playing a role?
Could autoimmune concerns be developing?
Are there genetic factors affecting how her body processes hormones, stress, medications, or nutrients?
These questions matter. The answers to these questions could determine a whole new course of treatment, stopping things that aren’t working, and feeling better.
How Women’s Symptoms Are Worsened
Genetics and biology are not destiny—but they can offer extremely helpful information. Some women and girls may process medications differently, struggle with inflammation, or have difficulty breaking down hormones or absorbing nutrients efficiently. Some women and girls have genes that make it difficult to break down serotonin or dopamine.
Ignoring these possibilities can leave women feeling stuck and unheard. They can even lead to irreparable damage to the body.
And the mental health consequences are real. When physical concerns are overlooked, women may experience worsening anxiety, depression, burnout, chronic fatigue, relationship struggles, hopelessness, and, in severe cases, self-harm or suicidal thoughts and behaviors.
How Women’s Symptoms Are Silenced
Imagine feeling physically unwell for years while being told everything is “normal.” That can make someone stop trusting their body—and stop trusting healthcare providers altogether. This is not about blaming doctors or dismissing mental health treatment. It’s about asking better questions and encouraging collaboration between therapists, physicians, specialists, and patients.
Women deserve healthcare providers who listen. Women deserve thorough evaluations. Women deserve better than being told their suffering is normal.
Because surviving is not the goal. Thriving is.
