An Introduction to Basic Communication: Why Assertiveness is Key

Communication is an essential part of our daily lives. It is how we express our thoughts, feelings, and ideas to others. However, not all is created equal. There are three main types of communication: passive, aggressive, and assertive. Each type has its own unique characteristics and can have a significant impact on our relationships with others.

Passive Communication

Passive communication is when a person does not say what they need or how they feel. Passive communicators are usually afraid of conflict and avoid confrontation at all costs. People who communicate passively often end up isolating themselves, withdrawing from others, and internalizing their feelings. This can lead to feelings of resentment, frustration, and even depression. With passive communication, there will always be some sort of explosion, whether that be an inner, or outer explosion.

Aggressive Communication

Aggressive communication, on the other hand, is when a person communicates their feelings impulsively and rudely. They often interpret things wrong and get into fights. This type of interaction is unhealthy and can lead to damaged relationships, hurt feelings, and even physical altercations. Aggressive communicators often have difficulty controlling their emotions and may lash out at others without thinking.

Assertive Communication

Assertive communication is the most effective and healthy way to communicate. It involves saying how you feel in a non-blaming way and using “I” statements. When you communicate assertively, you have less conflict with yourself and others. You are able to express your thoughts and feelings in a clear and respectful manner, while also being open to hearing the thoughts and feelings of others. This type of communication can lead to stronger relationships, increased self-esteem, and a greater sense of personal empowerment.

It is important to note that assertive communicating does not mean that you always get what you want. It simply means that you are able to express your needs and feelings in a way that is respectful and effective. It also means that you are able to listen to the needs and feelings of others and work together to find a solution that works for everyone.

In conclusion, communication is a vital part of our lives, and the way we communicate can have a significant impact on our relationships with others. Passive communication can lead to isolation and internalization, while aggressive communication can lead to damaged relationships and hurt feelings. Assertive communication is the most effective and healthy way to communicate, as it allows us to express our needs and feelings in a clear and respectful manner, while also being open to hearing the needs and feelings of others. By practicing assertive communication, we can build stronger relationships, increase our self-esteem, and improve our overall quality of life.
