Parenting with Pride: Navigating Your Teen’s Journey with Love & Understanding

Parenting a teenager is a journey full of growth—for them and for you. When your teen begins exploring or questioning their sexuality or gender identity, it can bring both beautiful moments and complex emotions.

Whether you fully embrace your teen’s identity, or find yourself struggling to understand it, remember this: your love and support can be life-saving. So, let’s explore helpful tips and resources to support you in walking alongside your teen—and parenting with Pride.

The Risks Are Real — But So Is the Power of Support

According to The Trevor Project’s 2023 National Survey on LGBTQ Youth Mental Health, 41% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year, and 14% attempted suicide. These risks increase among transgender and nonbinary youth. However, having even one supportive adult—most often a parent—can reduce these risks by up to 50%.

For autistic youth, the intersection of neurodivergence and LGBTQ+ identity adds further layers. Research shows that autistic teens are 3-6 times more likely to identify as LGBTQ+ than non-autistic peers (Strang et al., 2018). Many autistic teens also struggle with anxiety, sensory challenges, and social stigma, making affirming parental support even more crucial.

If You’re Struggling with Your Teen’s Identity

First—it’s okay to feel confused or overwhelmed. Many parents do. What matters is that you continue to show up with love.

  • Start with listening. Ask open questions, and validate their feelings without rushing to fix or debate.
  • Educate yourself. Read about LGBTQ+ identities and neurodiversity. Fear often comes from lack of understanding.
  • Separate values from love. You may not understand everything, but you can choose love and respect for your child.

If You Support Your Teen Wholeheartedly

Your support is powerful! Keep building an affirming environment—that’s at the heart of parenting with Pride.

  • Use affirming language. Consistently use your teen’s chosen name, pronouns, and identity.
  • Advocate in the community. Ensure safe and inclusive spaces in school, healthcare, and social settings.
  • Model pride at home. Celebrate milestones, display LGBTQ+ symbols, read inclusive books.

When the Journey Is Hard to Understand

Some parents wrestle with feelings of grief, fear, or guilt. That’s human. But it is never an excuse to withdraw love. Below are some great resources to help parents support their teens.

  • Therapy can help. A skilled counselor can guide individuals and families in processing emotions and building stronger relationships.
  • Embrace curiosity over judgment. The more you learn, the more compassion you’ll cultivate.
  • Remember your role. Your child’s identity is their own, but your love and presence shape their resilience and sense of worth.
